Job description
The Wear Research and Development Engineer will lead the wear tests and materials development programme (part of our R&D programme).
This will include:
-
Consolidating the research already conducted into the unique wear mechanism.
-
Improving the test procedures and upgrading the company’s novel wear test apparatus.
-
Assisting in setting up, and ultimately coordinating a small group of wear and materials experts around the globe to better understand the wear mechanism, source and test low-wear materials, develop measures to reduce wear, and, if needed, refine and improve material formulations and manufacturing processes.
-
Conduct an extensive wear test programme at the company’s laboratories, document results and constantly improve the test procedures and equipment.
-
Feed the relevant wear design requirements into the mill design and associated activities (e.g. maintenance requirements, cost of ownership).
There will be scope as the company grows for the role to expand into team management, sales engineering and/or product support (to give just a few examples).
Prerequisite skills and experience
The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate or post-graduate in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. metallurgy or materials engineering). Prior work experience in a relevant field of metallurgy and wear is preferred.
The successful applicant will work in a small, but very dynamic team. The role requires the ability to work both independently and to fit into, and contribute to, the team. The project involves multiple contributors and partners from around the globe and makes daily use of video conferencing. -
Comfortable working in a typical ‘start-up’ environment:
-
Be a part of building a new company.
-
Company systems and processes are developed with input from the team and set up as we need them. o Flexible and adaptable - ‘help wherever is needed’ ethos.
-
Informal, flat, team-based structure rather than formal reporting relationships.
-
Expect and cope with regular problems and scope shifts as the development progresses.
-
Work in a diverse, small team spread across the globe, with a diverse but complementary mix of problem-solving styles and approaches.
-
The successful applicant will be expected to assist the team and take on broader responsibilities in the growing business. These include role modelling good housekeeping and safety practices, managing procurement and suppliers, and contributing to the broader company technical and business programme.
